Patient. Fine. Balanced. Kind.

If only someone could speak of me the way she talks about you.

Here's the thing. As much as I would like to be able to be stoic, as much as I'd like to just sit back and have fun and not care about other people, as much as I wish I could escape the romantic in me, that part will always be there. I will always care too much. I will always put other people's needs before my own. I will always want a Jane Austen/John Green style love.

And it makes me wonder. How does it happen that those of us who want it so desperately are unable to achieve it? Or maybe it's that we want it so badly because we can't find it in our own lives. And so we go through our lives hoping each and every day that maybe, just maybe, that day is going to be the one when, by some strange miracle, we meet the person with whom we'll find it. Maybe it'll be the day that someone tells us they can't live without us, that every day is an adventure when they're with us, that they blush too easily when they look at us because they don't want to stare, that we are so incredibly beautiful  when we're asleep next to them, that they would do anything to make us happy.

Then we get to the point where we're convinced that no one ever will say those things to us. We think we're not worth the wasted breath. We're crazy for so many different reasons, and no one should care about us past the point of friendship because in the end they're only going to tire of us. They're going to get sick of supporting us through our emotional ups and downs, they'll be weary of saying "I love you" because we need to hear it every 10 seconds just to reaffirm it. We're not going to be enough to keep them interested.

Meanwhile our friends tell us that we just need to stop trying and it'll happen for us when we least expect it. And we'll scream inside our heads, "It's not that easy! You can't just turn hopeless romanticism off!" But we won't say it out loud, and we'll just spend our days waiting. We'll pretend we don't look for our person everywhere we go, that we don't hope someone's vague, angsty Tumblr posts are about us.

I need someone who will be my Augustus Waters, and I will be their Hazel Grace. I want to be the Alaska to someone's Pudge, and I want to equally be the Pudge to that person's Alaska. The drizzle and the hurricane, both of us. Maybe you have no idea what that means yet, but you will, and it's important. I want it so, so badly. I will be patient, as much as I can possibly be. Because as much as I don't believe it, I still hope that my friends are right when they say it'll happen for me. I'll try to keep believing that I'm worth it, that someone will want to know every intimate detail about me. It's so hard to hold on to that. But I will wait for you.

I am done with my graceless heart

Since it's the first day of 2012 (at least as I'm starting this post it is), so I figured I should make my list of resolutions.

1. Be happier.
2. Work out at least 3 times a week.
3. Eat 2 fruits and 2 vegetables a day.
4. Call mom once a week.
5. Enjoy my friends' last semester at Creighton with them.
6. Stop taking things for granted.
7. Let go of regrets; accept things for what they are.

A couple things have stuck with me lately -

I was listening to Shake It Out on our drive home from Kansas City today, and something hit me. I knew I had to listen to it when we left the restaurant after eating lunch. I don't know what it was; I was listening to it and it was just so moving. I even had to let a few tears go, looking out the window to hide them from my parents. Of course I've heard the song before, but it really meant something this time. It was like I knew that today marked a new start, and the lyrics were written to prove it to me:

Regrets collect like old friends
Here to relive your darkest moments
I can see no way, I can see no way
And all of the ghouls come out to play

And every demon wants his pound of flesh
But I like to keep some things to myself
I like to keep my issues drawn
It's always darkest before the dawn

And I've been a fool and I've been blind
I can never leave the past behind
I can see no way, I can see no way
I'm always dragging that horse around

All of these questions, such a mournful sound
Tonight I'm gonna bury that horse in the ground
So I like to keep my issues drawn
But it's always darkest before the dawn

Shake it up, shake it out, shake it up, shake it out, ooh woaaah
Shake it up, shake it out, shake it up, shake it out, ooh woaaaah

And it's hard to dance with a devil on your back
So shake him off, oh woah

I am done with my graceless heart
So tonight I'm gonna cut it out and then restart
Cause I like to keep my issues drawn
It's always darkest before the dawn

Shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, ooh woaaah
Shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, ooh woaaah

And it's hard to dance with a devil on your back
So shake him off, oh woah

And it's hard to dance with a devil on your back
And given half the chance would I take any of it back
It's a fine romance but it's left me so undone
It's always darkest before the dawn

Oh woah, oh woah...

And I'm damned if I do and I'm damned if I don't
So here's to drinks in the dark at the end of my road
And I'm ready to suffer and I'm ready to hope
It's a shot in the dark and right at my throat
Cause looking for heaven, for the devil in me
Looking for heaven, for the devil in me
Well what the hell I'm gonna let it happen to me

Shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, ooh woaaah
Shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, ooh woaaah

And it's hard to dance with a devil on your back
So shake him off, oh woah

Shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, ooh woaaah
Shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, ooh woaaah

And it's hard to dance with a devil on your back
So shake him off, oh woah

The other thing that struck me was a line from a book I read recently: "Regret is such a pointless emotion, don't you think?" I don't know why, but it just kind of got stuck in my head. I've been thinking about it for the past few days since I finished the book, and how I might sometimes say that I don't have any regrets because I've learned from my mistakes, and how that's not really true. I've been weighed down by regrets in my life - who I loved, how I loved them, things I've done, and things I've allowed to happen. So that's why #7 up there exists. I've decided to start letting things go, or at least trying to do that.

And #1, well...that's most important on that list.

I think I need a good things list right now

  • Started out the day with some awesome people at the Omaha Heritage Festival...interesting to say the least.
  • Got a little sun! :) Thank goodness for SPF 15 makeup, otherwise it'd be a lot worse.
  • Saw Andrea for a little bit - I miss my Kiewit staff friends with a ridiculous amount of missingness, so it was really great getting to chat with her.
  • Went through a tonnn of pictures to find the ones I needed to print. Such great memories.
  • Baaaaaseballlllllll game - MVC champions! #rolljays
  • Got the attention I needed - less than what I was really hoping for, but that's okay.
  • Working on a care package for Patrick. :)
  • Feelings validated by Tumblr - sometimes it's okay to be a stupid girl.
  • My first experience with Red Mango! Yummmm
  • The Prince and Me on TBS ♥
  • HP and the Chamber of Secrets to finish the evening.

Home is wherever I'm with you

Things I'm loving about home so far:

1. I can take a baaaath here.
2. I've read a hundred pages of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone tonight.
3. My parents and I had a good conversation over dinner.
4. I didn't have to pay for my dinner. ;)
5. I'm snuggled under my quilt reading, it's only 11:00 and I'm tired, and I can sleep in tomorrow.
6. I get to see some truly wonderful friends tomorrow.
7. I didn't have to buy my own groceries.
8. My parents are on a good spell, it seems. It's always nice when I don't have to be stuck in the middle of a pointless argument.
9. I get to see a bunch of my extended family on Sunday.
10. Although there's still an air of not really belonging here, I'm glad I am. It's not so frustrating this time.

Take my hand, we'll hide in the corner

Dear nonexistent readers,

Well, I've been sedated, had a tube stuck down my throat into my small intestine, had bits of my small intestine removed to be looked at, and spent the entire day on the couch. All I did was read, eat cold foods that didn't require chewing, and sleep. Man, I slept a lot.

I'm feeling great today. I've had a headache for a while, but it's less noticeable today than it was last night. My guess is that it's from the lack of caffeine I had yesterday - it was the first day in a very, very long time that I didn't consume ANY caffeine at all. CRAZINESS.

Right now I'm at Panera in La Vista, NE (part of Omaha) sitting in the back corner booth while my mom is having a small lunch meeting for work. Glad I brought my computer. :) I also brought Pride and Prejudice (♥) and the second book of the Hunger Games series, Catching Fire.

I started The Hunger Games on Christmas Day and finished it yesterday. We got it for my cousin Liam, but he was playing with his new basketball and I felt like taking a look at it. Katherine's addicted to the series, so I figured I should give it a try since I seem to like what she likes.

Well, I ended up not being able to put it down. I was craving it all evening, as well as the next day. So my mom agreed to buy me a copy to read while I was stuck on the couch all day yesterday. Thank goodness! We couldn't find Catching Fire anywhere, but then we stopped at WalMart today and got one. :) Once I finish them, we're going to send Catching Fire and Mockingjay (the third book) to my cousins Meghan and Caitlin for their birthday in February. Yay!

So, I guess that's all for now. You can hardly even see the mark from where they put the IV in my arm yesterday, and my throat doesn't even hurt anymore. It just feels a little more open than usual. Interesting.

Oh, we went to see "How Do You Know" on Sunday with Aunt Sara, Grandma, and Olivia (Liam's little sister). I wouldn't recommend it. It's cute enough at the end, but the story just kind of drags on. Mmmkay, bye!

I'll be home for Christmas

The worst finals week in the history of my life is finally over, and I am home. Thank the Lord.

I love Creighton and all of my amazing friends there, don't get me wrong. It's just wonderful coming home after a looooong week of stress and hassle.

I saw my baby cousin Cale today. :) That's me holding him this summer when I met him for the first time. He is SUCH a happy baby! Oh my goodness, I just love him so much! He's actually my cousin Ann Marie's son, so he's...my second cousin? First cousin once removed? I'm not sure. It's easier to call him my cousin.

Tomorrow, I shall see my BESTIESSSSS. I am so freaking excited. Rachel, Laura, and Corinne. Love love love. We're going to take the pictures we planned to take this summer, but now it's winter. We'll be taking them at Corinne's house, May Museum, downtown Fremont, and wherever else we feel like it. It's going to be a blast! Rachel's sister Megan (aka my sister Megan) shall be our photographer. To give you a preview, here's the epitome of my friendship with Rachel in photographic form:

Bahahahahaha. That was a fun night. Now you know all that you need to know about my best (home) friend and myself. :)

Also, I'll be baking cookies with friends Madi and Jayme, as well as their moms (Cozy and Diane, respectively) and my own mom and possibly Katie's mom Jodi. Katie unfortunately can't come, and neither can Marissa or her mom Marsha. Sad day. :( But it'll still be fun!

I'm exhausted. I got 3 hours of sleep last night, all thanks to Patrick. Pssssh. But in all honesty, it was totally worth it. What a great conversation.

Also, I had one heck of a morning. Between finishing room checks, packing my stuff, and checking out myself, it was extremely chaotic. I forgot a few things, but nothing I can't live without.

All is well on the home front. We got home from Uncle Mike and Aunt Sue's (where I saw Cale today) at 4:30ish? Maybe? Then the mama and I got groceries and Runza for dinner while Dad went to the warehouse to work on his car, or do whatever he does there. Then we came home and I took a bath in my itty-bitty bathtub, fell asleep for a few minutes after reading two chapters of Pride and Prejudice (which I'm re-reading over break). Since then, I've just been lying in bed typing this, texting Rachel and Corinne, and Skype chatting with Chris, who's leaving the Denver airport soon to finally fly home.

It's been a beautiful night, and I shall talk to you soon. But for now, sleep is calling me. ♥

Only Hope

"You have bewitched me, body and soul. And I love, I love, I love you and never wish to be parted from you from this day on."

I just finished watching Pride & Prejudice. I think I could watch that movie on repeat and never tire of it. It's my favorite movie AND my favorite book. It's the perfect romance, what every girl dreams about. I'm sitting here, trying to say something about it, and I've got nothing. What can I even say? I'm in awe of it. A love like that...it's what I've always wanted, what I'll want my entire life.

The question remaining is...who's going to help me find that?

Demand flavored pudding.

Yes, I know it's been two months. But being a sophomore is stressful, especially when you're applying to be an RA and to go to PROFESSIONAL SCHOOL NEXT YEAR. Wow. I really can't believe I'm already applying to pharmacy school...where has life gone? Oh, right...I've had my head down, buried in books and papers and MasteringBiology, so I haven't noticed life rushing past me on all sides.

Anyway. The point of this post: where is life going?

Huh? What do you mean, Ali?

Well. For my Honors course this semester (HRS 200: The Modern World, with Dr. Stafford of CU's English department - she's awesome, btw - I had her for Rhet & Comp freshman year), we just began reading Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451. WOW. I'm amazed that I've never read it before. I'm a pretty big fan of Bradbury's work. All Summer in a Day, The Martian Chronicles, etc. I enjoy his stories because they terrify me. They're frightening because the futures he describes are so possible, and I can actually visualize the world becoming those sci-fi freaky realities.

This is especially the case with F451. A world without books because we don't want to offend anyone and we want to learn trivial facts rather than THINK about issues. We want "a nice blend of vanilla tapioca." It's faster to learn facts, cramming them into our minds and pushing real thought out of the way. We'd rather be contestants on trivia shows than intellectual students. Bradbury predicted all those shows where contestants win prizes because they can remember lyrics to a song. He predicted it over 50 years ago. That's scary.

So what are you going to do about it? I'll tell you what I'm going to do. When they offer me that vanilla tapioca, I'll push it away and demand chocolate, butterscotch, and banana. Will you?

Ups and Downs

Okay, so today has had some major ups and downs.

Downs:
1) It was the first day back to classes after spring break.
2) I had to stay inside my classes and watch other people out and about enjoying the AMAZING weather we're having in Omaha right now.
3) I really wish it was summer.
4) I had to dissect a rat.

Ups:
1) I got a 90 on my last Chem test, which is a good improvement from the previous one!
2) I got a 97 on my Philosophy paper for one of the toughest teachers on campus!
3) It is wonderfully, gloriously, enlighteningly gorgeous outside today, and will be tomorrow!
4) I worked out and enjoyed it!
5) I love my friends!
6) We're making smoothies tonight!
7) I am inspired once again!

So the ups definitely outweigh the downs, which kind of makes my day. :) Therefore, I have had a great day today. Hope y'all did too!

I don't know what else to do, so I'll blog!

I'm so bored right now. Soooooo bored. Ryan's asleep, so I can't text him, Facebook is boring me, no emails are coming in...even my Twitter hasn't changed in 4 hours! Insanity, I tell you. The most boring insanity you've ever come across.

I wrote a lot today...I finished my Philosophy paper that's due Monday (wow, I can't believe spring break is almost over), and then I wrote another page or so for my novel. I still have no idea what I'm going to call it...maybe I'll do like Sir Thomas Malory and have my publisher title it in incorrect French once I finish it.
------------------------------------>
Like so. Lol.

But yeah, that's what I did today. OH! Plus I went shopping for summer clothes with my mama. That's always fun. :) Got some great stuff: 2 pairs of denim shorts, some tank tops, a SWEET 80's-flashback top, and a few other shirts. I enjoy shopping. :D

Right. So...I think I'll try to write a little more...and maybe read some more Tristan & Iseult. I like that book. It reads quite easily, and is much better than the movie. :)

Lovez!

Holy crapoli...

Oh my God...I can't believe this. I just can't get over it...do you know what this could mean for me? HOLY CRAP!

To explain why I'm freaking: a soon-to-be-published author is reading my novel blog!!!! OMG. WHAT? HOW DOES THAT HAPPEN?!?! I have been blessed by the writing gods. I mean, that's actually part of the reason I started the blog, hoping that someone with connections would eventually stumble upon it. But I honestly never thought that would really happen. I don't know how to feel about this...I mean, I'm unbelievably psyched about this opportunity to connect with someone in the writing world, but it makes me nervous. I don't want to disappoint...

And the thing that sucks about it is the fact that I'm kinda stuck with it...I'm not sure how to keep the story going. What I started writing made it go too quickly, and that was the problem with the novel I attempted writing last summer. So that's why I haven't posted on there in a while. Well that and the outrageous amount of homework that comes with college...but you know, I was doing pretty well there for a while. I just need some inspiration.

So I'm on spring break, and SO GLAD. I've been able to spend a little more time with Ryan... :)
which I am definitely enjoying. We went bowling on Saturday and played some pool at the alley - haha we both suck at pool! And I suck at bowling (he's really good at it), but I really enjoy it. The only bad part of it, though, is that I kind of injured my quad/hip again. :( It has been killing me since then, but I went back to the chiropractor again and got my hip popped back in. So it's been better today. He also fixed my neck, which has been hurting a lot lately. Dr. Brainard said it's from looking down so much...stupid homework! Haha.

So yeah, I've gotten to see Ryan twice since I got home on Friday. I can't be with him too much since he doesn't have spring break...silly high school. Plus, he works quite a bit in the evenings. But I'll take what I can get. :) I always enjoy spending time with him, even if we just eat fast food and rent a movie. It's always a good time. Plus his mom Angiee is really cool and I get to see her too! And I got to see his grandma the other evening because she came over to his house. I like her too. :) Haha I kinda feel like part of their family, even after only 10 months (on St. Patrick's Day!).

So...that's what's going on with me. How about you?

Oh wow...I think I actually just got a little bit of inspiration...
Lovez!

Life in general? No, just today.

Wow...amazing how a few days can feel like a few weeks. It seems like forever since I've posted! I've been working quite a bit lately on developing my storyline, but it doesn't really seem to be developing. I know it's going to take quite a bit more time...it's just frustrating that I myself don't even know exactly where the story is going. But it will work itself out eventually.

Other than that, I have been socializing and not doing homework all weekend. I saved my Philosophy reading until last night to do, but it wasn't even too bad. Actually, I sort of enjoyed reading it. Plato's dialogues tend to be entertaining. I even read ahead! But that was all the homework I did for the weekend. We had a visitor by the name of Rosey, who I must admit was pretty dang awesome. I did the chauffeuring for Shannon and her lovely cousin, and very much enjoyed hanging out with them. Salvation Army is a wonderful store, even though I didn't find any nifty retro clothing. But I did get a fantastic heart-shaped pan for 99 cents, in which I shall make Ryan some brownies for V-day! And then we watched a few movies, including Borat, Ocean's Eleven, and Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2. Great times.

I feel like thinking a bunch about life, but I don't know where to begin.

It Has Begun!

Alrighty then...I've started a new blog dedicated strictly to my novel. It's here. Please follow it and invite anyone else you know to follow it too!
